In the design solution for rehabilitation of the bridge over the Sava River, near Ivanja Reka, complete rehabilitation and reconstruction of deck structure of the north (upstream) bridge – dilatations I, II, III, IV and V, were foreseen. Complete rehabilitation of deck structure and pedestrian path on the upper and underneath side, rehabilitation of head beams and bridge parapet, as well as complete waterproofing with drainage and fender, was included in the design.
The bridge over the Sava near Ivanja Reka was completed in 1981. It had been in exploitation for only 20 years when the first signs of deterioration appeared. This was due to improper and conscienceless construction with mostly prefabricated elements. Water seepage occurred, combined with strewing salt on roads in winter period, which resulted in reinforcement corrosion and cracks in concrete. Investigation works were performed to determine the extent of damage and soon after that, rehabilitation design was prepared. It included removal and replacement of the damaged upper parts of the bridge superstructure- levelling concrete, transverse concrete joints, some prefabricated slabs with corroded reinforcement and replacement of the entire cantilever girder, including the pedestrian part. The concrete was removed with high pressure pumps and robotized device.
